Earlier this year our Marketing Manager, Wendy Payne, gave an interview live on BBC Radio Gloucestershire early 2015 about the need for better toilet facilities in the county.

As co-sponsors of the Changing Places campaign (Aveso Ltd) we’re incredibly proud to support this important campaign and would like businesses in Gloucestershire to show their support to the disabled people.

Have a listen to the interview below

Here are a few interesting stats (as of 07.07.15) on how Gloucestershire compares to Nottinghamshire,

  • Gloucester City Population: c.122,000
  • Changing Places Toilets: 0
  • Nottingham City Population: c.311,000
  • Changing Places Toilets: 14
  • Gloucestershire Population: c.858,000
  • Changing Places Toilets: 1
  • Nottinghamshire Population: c.786,000
  • Changing Places Toilets: 16

No_Disabled_Toilet.jpgNottingham is just one example of many cities who have really embraced Changing Places and seen the value and importance and with Gloucester developing at such a fast rate and attracting tourism, we would like to see Changing Places grow.

So what are Changing Places toilets?

Changing Places toilet rooms are life changing facilities for many thousands of people by providing sanitary accommodation for people with multiple and complex disabilities who have one or two assistants as shown in the image below of the facility installed by Astor-Bannerman at Sheffield Hospital.

Accessible Changing Places facilities are 12 sq.m rooms which include a height adjustable changing table, mobile or ceiling hoist and have room for up to 2 carers.  Standard wheelchair accessible toilets aren’t suitable for many disabled people or their carers.  This includes people with profound and multiple learning disabilities as well as other serious impairments such as spinal injuries, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis or an acquired brain injury.  We want to see images like this below of Julie Clough a thing of the past.
