Changing Places Overview
Northumbria University’s Coach Lane Campus, situated approximately 3 miles from Newcastle city centre, serves as a hub for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
The campus is home to various health-related programs, including Nursing, Midwifery, Health and Social Work, Education, and Community Wellbeing. It boasts facilities such as the Clinical Skills Centre, which offers students simulated hospital environments to develop practical skills and gain valuable experience in real-life situations.
In line with its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, the university has installed a fully compliant Changing Places facility. This facility provides essential support for individuals with complex disabilities, ensuring they have access to appropriate hygiene and changing facilities during their time on campus.

Changing Places Products Specified & Installed
Collaborating closely with Northumbria University’s project team and access consultants, Astor Bannerman delivered a high-specification Changing Places facility that adheres to the latest BS8300 and Changing Places Consortium standards.
The facility is strategically located on the ground floor of C Block, approximately 19 meters from the main entrance, ensuring ease of access for all users.
The installation includes:
-
Ceiling Track Hoist, facilitating safe and smooth transfers across the room
-
Full room coverage, emergency alarm system, grab rails, wide-access door, and appropriate signage
Each component was selected to support long-term reliability, ease of use, and low maintenance, aligning with Northumbria University’s inclusive design vision.
The Importance of Changing Places in Education
Accessible toilets alone are insufficient for many individuals with complex disabilities. Changing Places facilities offer the additional space and specialist equipment required, enabling full participation in educational and campus life.
Northumbria University’s decision to include this facility underscores its role as a progressive, inclusive institution that considers the needs of all users.
