Situated on the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, the Sarah Turvill Multifaith Centre provides a dedicated space for students and staff to come together, reflect and practise their faith. Located on Poole Gate Road, the centre has been designed as an open and welcoming environment for people of different faiths and beliefs, as well as those seeking a quiet place for reflection.
The centre includes a range of purpose-built spaces, including a 50-person Muslim prayer room, ablution facilities, a Multifaith Room and areas for chaplaincy, meetings and community activities. Its central location on campus means it is accessible to the university community throughout the day.
Alongside these facilities, the centre incorporates a dedicated Changing Places toilet, helping to ensure that accessibility is considered as part of the wider building design. The facility provides the additional space and specialist equipment required by people who cannot use a standard accessible toilet independently.
Accessibility within a shared campus environment
University campuses are used by a diverse community, with students, staff and visitors spending extended periods on site for study, work, social activities and events. Having appropriate accessible facilities available can therefore play an important role in enabling people to participate comfortably in campus life.
The Sarah Turvill Multifaith Centre has been created around the principles of welcome and inclusion, and the addition of a Changing Places facility extends this approach to those with more complex personal care requirements.
Providing a dedicated space means users who require assistance from a carer, specialist equipment or additional room can access suitable personal care facilities while on campus, without needing to leave the university to find appropriate provision.

The Changing Places facility has been fitted with a selection of specialist Astor Bannerman equipment, including:
- Astor OT200 Ceiling Track Hoist
- Astor CTX2 Height-Adjustable Changing Table
- Astor ABW-CP Height Adjustable Wash Basin
- KwickScreen Privacy Screen
- Specialist grab rails and accessible bathroom accessories
- Emergency assistance alarm system
The OT200 ceiling track hoist supports assisted transfers, while the CTX2 provides a height-adjustable platform for personal care. The ABW-CP wash basin has been designed to provide accessible washing facilities, with the KwickScreen offering additional privacy within the room.
The combination of equipment creates a dedicated space where users and carers can carry out personal care with greater comfort and dignity.
