Client: The Cotswold School
Location: Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire
Scope: Replacement of an older Astor Bannerman wash basin with a new Astor ABW-CP height-adjustable wash basin, adapting an existing hygiene room to meet changing pupil needs.

School Background

The Cotswold School is a large secondary school in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, supporting pupils across a wide range of needs within a mainstream education environment.

The school currently has two pupils with additional needs on roll and continues to adapt its facilities to ensure appropriate support is available as individual requirements change.

Astor Bannerman has an established relationship with the school, providing servicing and support for specialist equipment within its existing facilities.

Project Overview

The school’s hygiene room was originally equipped approximately 10 years ago and had provided an important facility for pupils requiring additional personal care support.

As the needs of the pupils using the school changed, the existing wash basin was identified for an upgrade.

The original basin was an older Astor Bannerman ABW model, which was replaced with the latest Astor ABW-CP height-adjustable wash basin.

This provided the school with an opportunity to modernise a key element of its existing hygiene room without the need for a complete refurbishment.

From the Original ABW to Astor ABW-CP

After around 10 years of use, the original ABW wash basin was replaced with the updated ABW-CP, providing a modern, height-adjustable solution better suited to the changing requirements of the pupils using the facility.

The upgrade provides:

Height adjustability to accommodate different users and care requirements

Improved accessibility for pupils with complex needs

Greater flexibility for staff supporting personal care

A modern replacement for an established, well-used facility

Rather than replacing the entire room, the school was able to make a targeted improvement to an existing facility, extending its usefulness for years to come.

Adapting Facilities Around Individual Needs

The upgrade was undertaken as the school prepared to welcome a young person with complex needs into the mainstream school environment.

This demonstrates the importance of ensuring that school facilities can evolve alongside their pupils.

For schools, accessibility isn’t always about creating an entirely new facility. In many cases, upgrading key pieces of equipment within an existing hygiene room can make a significant difference to how effectively the space can be used.

The ABW-CP provides the flexibility required to support different users while helping staff deliver personal care safely and with dignity.

Conclusion

The upgrade at The Cotswold School demonstrates how an existing hygiene room can be adapted to meet changing pupil needs without requiring a complete refurbishment.

After approximately 10 years of service, the school’s original Astor Bannerman ABW wash basin was replaced with the latest Astor ABW-CP height-adjustable wash basin, providing an updated and adaptable solution for a young person with complex needs joining the school.

It is a simple but effective example of how targeted equipment upgrades can help schools maintain accessible, practical and inclusive facilities for the long term.
