When Debbie and her family purchased a new home, one of the main priorities was ensuring it could fully meet the care needs of their son, Dan, who sustained a spinal injury resulting in significant paralysis. As part of a wider house adaptation project, the family set out to create a bathroom that would allow Dan to enjoy safe, dignified, and comfortable bathing – with carers fully supported in their role.

In their previous home, bathing was a challenge. The bathroom was too small, and the standard bath too shallow and low for Dan’s needs, especially once a bath seat was in place. It was also difficult for carers to support him effectively, which made bath time stressful and physically demanding.

Project Goals and Requirements

The new bathroom was designed around a few key goals:

  • A bath deep and long enough to accommodate a bath seat and allow Dan to be fully immersed in water
  • Equipment that was height-adjustable, to support carers and reduce physical strain
  • A modern, homely appearance that avoided an institutional or clinical feel
  • The ability to carry out bathing and drying in the same space, eliminating unnecessary transfers
  • Dan finds showers uncomfortable due to his sensitivity to water pressure, so it was important that the new setup offered a relaxing and therapeutic bathing experience.

Project Process & Approach

Astor Bannerman supported the family from the early stages of planning. As the family were unable to trial the bath at home due to space constraints, a demonstration was arranged at Dan’s school so they could experience how the bath functioned and how it would meet their needs.

This collaborative, problem-solving approach helped the family make confident choices about their equipment.

Solution and Equipment Provided

To meet these needs, Astor Bannerman supplied and installed:

  • Astor Comfort Bath – a height-adjustable assisted bath designed for ease of use, dignity, and carer support. The bath was chosen for its modern design, deep tub, and adjustable height. The bath’s shower attachment also makes washing easier and more efficient.
  • Astor Neatfold Stretcher – allowing carers to dry Dan over the bath itself – removing the need to transfer him while wet.

The bath was finished in a grey outer colour to match the home’s aesthetic and create a cohesive, non-clinical look.

Impact and Benefits

The new equipment has had a transformative effect on daily life for both Dan and his carers.

Bath time is now a positive and enjoyable part of the day, helping to ease Dan’s discomfort and support better relaxation and sleep.

“It has completely transformed bath times into a pleasurable experience. The joy Dan gets from being in the bath rubs off on all around him. Having a bath reduces Dan’s pain and makes him relaxed ready for bed – so lovely”

The height-adjustable bath has made a significant difference to carers as well, improving access and comfort during bathing.

With drying now possible over the bath, wet floors and bedroom carpets are no longer an issue – something the whole family appreciates.

Dan says:

“I love my new bath. I wish I could have a bath every day!”

Installation and Support

The planning and installation process went smoothly, with clear communication throughout. Dan’s family praised the Astor Bannerman team, particularly Kane DeCaux, who took extra steps to ensure the equipment was suitable.

Because there wasn’t enough space at home to test the bath during the planning phase, Kane arranged for a demonstration to take place at Dan’s school – making sure the family felt confident and informed.

“Very responsive company. Kane was wonderfully patient with us testing the bath and adaptive to meet our needs… Communication was excellent – always responsive and quick, with good ideas.”

Conclusion

This project demonstrates how thoughtful, personalised equipment – supported by expert planning – can make a meaningful difference to everyday life. For Dan and his family, bathing is no longer a challenge but a source of comfort and enjoyment.
