Respite Centre Background
Oak Beck House is a specialist respite centre located near Bilton & Woodfield Community Library in Harrogate. The centre provides short term care and support for individuals with complex needs, offering families and carers an opportunity for rest while ensuring individuals continue to receive high quality, person centred care.
Respite centres play a vital role in supporting both individuals and their families. They provide safe, accessible environments where personal care, social interaction and daily living activities can be carried out with dignity and independence, while also reducing pressure on caregivers.
To support this, Oak Beck House required a fully integrated moving and handling solution across multiple spaces within the building.
Project Overview
The project focused on delivering a flexible and connected hoisting system that allows safe, efficient transfers throughout key areas of the centre.
Multiple ceiling track hoists were installed across the building, including the main communal area, kitchen, quiet TV room, bedroom spaces and a sensory room.
The main system is designed with gated track connections, allowing users to move between spaces without the need for manual transfers. The communal area acts as a central hub, with gated transitions into both the kitchen and quiet room, supporting smooth and dignified movement throughout the space.
In contrast, the sensory room has been equipped with a standalone ceiling track hoist, allowing for uninterrupted use of the space while maintaining a calm and controlled environment tailored to sensory needs.
Technical Features
The installation includes:
→ Multiple Astor OT200 ceiling track hoists across key living areas
→ Gated tracking systems connecting communal areas to kitchen and quiet room
→ Standalone hoist system within the sensory room
→ Hoisting provision within bedroom and kitchen areas to support daily living activities
The gated tracking system allows controlled transfers between spaces, reducing the need for manual handling and supporting safer movement across the building.
Hygiene Room Installation
A dedicated hygiene room has been designed to support personal care in a safe and purpose-built environment.
This includes:
→ Ceiling track hoist (Astor OT200)
→ Height-adjustable changing table
→ Height-adjustable wash basin
The layout allows carers to carry out personal care tasks safely while maintaining comfort and dignity for the individual. The inclusion of adjustable equipment ensures the space can be adapted to suit a wide range of needs and postural requirements.
Conclusion
The installation at Oak Beck House demonstrates how a well planned ceiling track hoist system can support both care delivery and quality of life within a respite environment.
By combining gated systems with standalone solutions and a fully equipped hygiene room, the centre now benefits from a flexible, future-ready space that prioritises safety, dignity and independence.
This project highlights the importance of designing environments that support not just care needs, but everyday living.
