Project: Accessible Toilet Hoist Installation
Client: University of Liverpool
Location: Vine Court Halls of Residence, Liverpool
Scope: Installation of two Astor OT200 Ceiling Track Hoists within accessible toilets located in residential social areas across two floors

University Background

University accommodation plays a key role in student wellbeing, independence, and inclusion. Increasingly, higher education settings are reviewing their facilities to ensure students with physical disabilities can live and socialise comfortably within halls of residence.

At Vine Court Halls of Residence, the University of Liverpool identified the need to improve accessible toilet provision within communal social areas. The aim was to ensure these spaces could safely support students requiring assisted transfers, while still working for everyday residential use.

By upgrading facilities across both the ground and first floor, the university has strengthened inclusive provision in spaces designed for shared living and connection.

Project Overview

The project involved installing two Astor OT200 Ceiling Track Hoists, each within an accessible toilet serving key social areas at Vine Court.

One system was installed on the ground floor, with a second installed on the first floor, ensuring accessible support is available across multiple levels of the building.

A ceiling-mounted system was selected because it:

  • Keeps the floor area clear within the accessible toilet
  • Reduces the need to manoeuvre mobile hoists in limited space
  • Supports safe, smooth transfers
  • Provides a discreet and practical long-term solution

Each single-track system was carefully designed around the WC and key transfer points to ensure ease of use and efficient operation within both rooms.

Technical Features

The accessible toilets now benefit from two Astor OT200 Ceiling Track Hoists, designed for reliable, everyday use in busy residential environments.

Key outcomes of the installation include:

  • Safer transfers for students requiring physical assistance
  • Reduced manual handling risk for staff and carers
  • Clear, uncluttered layouts within both accessible toilets
  • A more consistent and dignified care routine

Each system integrates seamlessly into its respective space, maintaining functionality while supporting a clean and practical room layout.
