Changing Places Overview
As a globally recognised leader in creative education, the London College of Fashion is committed to making its spaces accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for all students, staff, and visitors.
As part of its move to a new purpose-built campus at East Bank, the college installed a fully compliant Changing Places facility — offering vital accessible toilet and hygiene support for people with complex disabilities.
Changing Places Products Specified & Installed
Working in close collaboration with UAL’s project team and access consultants, Astor Bannerman delivered a high-specification Changing Places facility that meets the latest BS8300 and Changing Places Consortium standards.
The room is positioned in a central and accessible area of the new campus, designed with ease of use and dignity in mind.
The installation includes:
-
Astor OT200 ceiling track hoist, providing safe and smooth transfers across the room
-
Kwickscreen privacy screen to offer discretion when needed
-
Peninsular toilet with access on both sides
-
Full room coverage, emergency alarm system, grab rails, wide-access door, and appropriate signage
Every element was selected to support long-term reliability, ease of use, and low maintenance, aligning with UAL’s inclusive design vision.
The Importance of Changing Places in Education
Accessible toilets alone aren’t enough for many disabled people. Changing Places facilities offer the additional space and specialist equipment required for people with more complex needs — enabling them to fully participate in learning, social, and cultural life.
UAL’s decision to include this facility reinforces its role as a progressive, inclusive institution that considers the needs of all users.
