About Sadler’s Wells
Sadler’s Wells is a world-renowned performing arts venue dedicated to dance and innovation. Located in Stratford, London, the theatre is a central fixture in the UK’s cultural landscape, attracting international talent and audiences alike.
In 2025, as part of ongoing accessibility improvements, the theatre took the step to install a fully compliant Changing Places toilet within its main building — significantly improving inclusive provision for visitors with complex needs and their carers.
The Changing Places Facility
We worked closely with the venue and its architectural consultants to design and install a Changing Places toilet that meets the requirements of BS8300 and the Changing Places Consortium. The facility is discreetly located on the ground floor near the main public entrance, ensuring it is easily accessible for visitors throughout the day and during evening performances.
The room was carefully integrated into the existing structure with minimal disruption, taking into account both functional and aesthetic requirements within a listed and high-footfall building.
Equipment Supplied
The facility includes all mandatory Changing Places equipment, including:
-
Peninsular toilet with space on both sides
-
Emergency alarm and privacy screen
-
Grab rails, wide-access door and appropriate signage
Every element was selected for reliability, user comfort, and long-term maintainability — reflecting Sadler’s Wells’ commitment to building lasting inclusive infrastructure.

The Importance of Changing Places in Cultural Spaces
For many individuals with complex disabilities, standard accessible toilets are simply not suitable. Without a Changing Places toilet, visits to theatres, museums, and other public venues are often impossible or cut short.
This installation reflects a growing awareness of the importance of accessibility in the arts — and the role that thoughtful design plays in enabling true participation.
By adding a Changing Places facility, Sadler’s Wells now ensures that all visitors — regardless of physical ability — can access performances, events, and facilities in dignity and comfort.
