At Astor Bannerman, we pride ourselves on supporting families and individuals with mobility needs by designing and installing accessible bathroom solutions. In this case, the client’s stepfather reached out to us to update their bathroom equipment to better suit the client’s current needs and preferences.

Bathroom Background

The client, a 24-year-old man with Cerebral Palsy, is fully hoisted for all transfers and was actively involved in the process to ensure the equipment would meet his therapeutic and accessibility requirements. His existing bathroom featured an Astor Bannerman Talus bath, installed more than 15 years ago, an Astor Bannerman height-adjustable washbasin, and a standard WC. While the hoist, previously supplied by Astor Bannerman, remained in good working order, the rest of the equipment required renewal.

Project Goals and Requirements

The primary objectives were to:

  • Replace the existing equipment with modern, more suitable options.
  • Improve the client’s daily bathing experience with added therapeutic features.
  • Ensure the bathroom met the client’s accessibility needs while also enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the space.

Specific features requested by the client included:

  • A new bath with music, lights, and air-spa for therapeutic purposes.
  • Short-lever taps on the height-adjustable washbasin to improve ease of use and prevent obstruction.
  • A Closomat Wash and Dry Toilet.

Project Process and Approach

Bathroom plan

The project was planned and coordinated by Kane DeCaux, National Private OT & Case Management Business Development Manager at Astor Bannerman, with support from an approved contractor, Houghton Home Improvements Ltd. After an initial demonstration of the Astor Comfort Height Adjustable Bath and a survey facilitated by Kane, the renovation was carefully scheduled to minimise disruption.

During the two-week installation, the bathroom was sectioned off from the client’s bedroom, and the client used his parents’ en-suite level-access shower. The works were completed on schedule, with Kane overseeing every step of the process to ensure a smooth and efficient outcome.

Solution and Equipment Provided

Astor Bannerman replaced the existing equipment with:

Additional works included the removal and recycling of the old equipment, alterations to the pre-works setup, and the installation of new Altro non-slip flooring for added safety.

Outcome and Client Feedback

The client’s reaction made the effort worthwhile. Although the client’s stepfather had planned a reveal, the client couldn’t wait to explore his new bathroom. He immediately connected his iPad to the bath to play music, showing visible joy and enthusiasm during the handover.

The client shared his excitement on social media, posting photos of the new setup and publicly thanking the team involved in the project. Such heartfelt feedback highlights the positive impact of accessible, thoughtfully designed bathroom solutions on clients’ daily lives.

This project showcases Astor Bannerman’s dedication to delivering tailored, high-quality solutions that enhance both functionality and quality of life.
